Een zorgvuldig gepland concept voor overspanningsbeveiliging is een centraal onderdeel van de bliksembeveiliging en is met name van belang in medische instellingen zoals ziekenhuizen. In het bijzonder moet rekening worden gehouden met de gevolgen van directe en indirecte blikseminslagen. Want de elektrische en elektronische systemen in het ziekenhuis zijn van levensbelang voor patiënten. Doordat ze tevens deel uitmaken van de voortschrijdende digitaliseringsprocessen, is het van essentieel belang dat deze systemen betrouwbaar functioneren. Met overspanningsbeveiliging zorgt u ervoor dat de gevaarlijke storingsenergieën tot een acceptabel niveau worden teruggebracht en dus geen gevaar meer vormen.

Potentiaalvereffening bij blikseminslag speelt een bijzonder belangrijke rol in gebouwen met een extern bliksembeveiligingssysteem. Alle systemen die van buiten het gebouw binnenkomen
moeten volgens de EN 62305-3 worden uitgevoerd. Bovendien moet u bij de planning een EMC-gebaseerd bliksembeveiligingszone-concept conform EN 62305-4 ter bescherming van gevoelige componenten in acht nemen.
Overspanningsbeveiligingsapparaten worden in bliksemstroomafleiders, overspanningsafleiders en combi-afleiders onderverdeeld. De hoogste eisen ten aanzien van het afleidend vermogen gelden voor bliksemstroom- en combi-afleiders die de overgang maken van bliksembeveiligingszone 0A naar 1 of 0A naar 2. Deze afleiders moeten gedeeltelijke bliksemstromen met een golfvorm van 10/350 μs op een niet-destructieve manier kunnen afvoeren om te voorkomen dat destructieve bliksemdeelstromen de elektrische installatie van een gebouw binnendringen.
Bij de overgang van bliksembeveiligingszone 0B naar 1 (of na de bliksemstroomafleider bij de overgang van bliksembeveiligingszones 1 naar 2 en hoger) worden overspanningsafleiders ter beveiliging tegen overspanningen gebruikt. Hun taak is om de restenergie van de voorafgaande veiligheidsniveaus verder af te zwakken in de installatie geïnduceerde of zelf opgewekte schakeloverspanningen te beperken.
