Protection in case of direct lightning strikes and transient surges

Lightning is particularly likely to strike wind turbines due to their exposed location, height and complexity.

As lightning strikes often cause considerable material and economic damage, it is important to protect your turbines. The chief objective is to prevent lightning from damaging the rotor blades, bearings and electrical systems. Permanent availability is the top priority, both for on- and offshore wind turbines.

Rotor protection | Detection of lightning current

The rotor blades are a highly stressed part of the turbine. They require comprehensive protection against outside influences, e.g., lightning currents and surges. This can be achieved with a profound protection concept using DEHN products and constant monitoring.

External lightning protection for the nacelle

Safe interception and discharge of direct lightning strikes is decisive to the availability of your wind turbine. The stainless steel air-termination and connection elements fulfil enhanced requirements regarding corrosion resistance.

Good to know: DEHN components are tested in compliance with the standard series DIN EN 62561.

Surge protection for the nacelle

Comprehensive protection of the nacelle requires consideration of both power supply and information technology systems.

Lightning currents and surges put the sensitive technology in the nacelle of the wind turbine at risk. Take preventative measures to avoid damage and downtime. Coordinated surge protection maximises the availability of your turbine.

Surge protection in the tower base

Selection of the protective devices for the tower base depends on the end of life behaviour required of the arrester.

Based on what is the decisive factor for you, permanent system availability or the safe condition after overloading, you choose the arrester technology which best suits your needs.

Permanent availability of the system with DEHNguard®

If your priority is the permanent availability of the system, arresters with a defined disconnection of the protective elements from the current circuit in case of overload are suitable for you. Devices from the DEHNguard® family suit this purpose. These are also available with an optional integrated backup fuse and remote signalling contact. The protective modules can simply be replaced when necessary.

Safe condition of the system with DEHN V SCP

You want to make sure that the system is in a safe condition after overloading? DEHN V SCP arresters are the perfect choice. Here, a defined short-circuit is produced in the protective device which disconnects the system being protected in case of overload.

Earthing, equipotential bonding

The high level of DEHN product quality safeguards the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of your plant. This secures the reliable function of the entire electrical system and lightning protection system in the long term.

Connection elements which are capable of carrying short-circuit current ensure the safe contact of the earth-termination system with metal parts of the foundations and the main earthing busbar.

DEHN Safety Equipment Portfolio

Protect your system - With the technically highly developed DEHNshort protective system you have arc faults firmly under control and can keep downtime to a minimum.

Protect your employees - You can keep your employees safe by providing optimum DEHNcare personal protective equipment and suitable safety devices for live working.

Safe service and maintenance work

Work on electrical systems is extremely demanding. Your workers have to be highly concentrated and very cautious at all times.

Personal protective equipment PPE helps prevent life-threatening injury, as far as is possible. A complete set of equipment consists of a jacket, trousers, gloves, safety shoes and head protection including a face shield. All materials must be flame and heat resistant, insulating and completely cover the skin.

Provide your employees with equipment which offers them the best possible protection aginst arc faults.
